UKSG Presentation November 2009

Posted by: Chrissie Turkington on: November 18, 2009

At the UKSG E-Resources for FE Seminar I gave a presentation looking at whether libraries and learning resource centres are providing learner centred environments.
My aim for the presentation was to get you all thinking.  Over the last few months I’ve been talking to Librarians putting forward observations and reflections, on how libraries could respond to the evolving [...]

The ebrary Reader – technical issues

Posted by: Chrissie Turkington on: October 30, 2009

Now that colleagues are starting to use ebrary, it has come to light that to use the ebrary Reader (the one that includes speech), you may need to ask your technical team to set it up for you on the network.  Here are all the details you need which have been provided direct from ebrary.

We require [...]

Copyright and Digitising Content

Posted by: Chrissie Turkington on: October 21, 2009

Copyright. It seems like a minefield of potential problems and just when you think you have it all worked out, you find another potential issue. We get asked a lot about copyright of digital information and where to obtain information. Hopefully in this blog post I can give you some pointers for where to look for advice [...]

Excellence Gateway Library Case Studies

Posted by: Chrissie Turkington on: October 14, 2009

In 2007/8 the RSCs were given funding for an Information Officers post whose role, for half of their time, is to seek and assist with authoring FE case studies for inclusion on the QIA Excellence Gateway.  This work has resulted in a wealth of information being made available.  Some of the library related case studies [...]

Nintendo DSi and the JISC eBooks for FE

Posted by: Chrissie Turkington on: September 9, 2009

Well, I’m disappointed.  I’ve tried the JISC eBook for FE collection on the Nintendo DSi, and confirmed what my colleague Angela from Bury College mentioned to me that they are not viewable.
Out of the box the DSi doesn’t come with the browser.  To get the browser you firstly need to use the built in wireless facility to [...]

JISC SIS Landscape Study – Case Studies

Posted by: Chrissie Turkington on: September 2, 2009

I’ve just spent some time having a look at the Case Studies that have been produced as part of the JISC Shared Infrastructure Services (SIS) Landscape Study and found some very interesting links and ideas.
My main gripe with the studies is that they are all text based and do take some working through. To hopefully [...]

JISC TechDis, the JISC funded Advisory Service in the fields of accessibility and inclusion, have been working for some time now on assessing the accessibility of eBooks and eBook readers and have produced a lot of guidance for anyone purchasing these products.  Take a look at the links below.  They are extremely informative.
eBooks and Accessibility [...]

Sony backing open eBook format

Posted by: Chrissie Turkington on: August 21, 2009

Interesting news from Sony about opening up their eBook format.   http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8201093.stm This should make the Sony eBook store more appealing for content for all eBook readers.  However, I still think that because the Sony reader has it’s own proprietary software (that looks a bit like iTunes) it limits how the devices can be used [...]
